Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (sporadic pulmonary LAM) is a rare fatal lung disease that affects women from all racial backgrounds in their childbearing years. There currently is no effective treatment for the disease. In LAM, abnormal cells proliferate in the lungs, lymphatics and blood vessels, ultimately leading to respiratory failure. There are an estimated 250,000 women worldwide suffering from LAM. A lung transplant is sometimes an option if a matched donor can be found, but there is a critical shortage of lungs for transplant.
